Heels to host Super Regional after win over UNC-W
Carolina wins state-dominated regional

(Editor's note: This page will be updated once at week at the first of each week through the ACC tournament, which starts May 21, and through the Tar Heels journey in the NCAA tournament, which starts May 30 and runs through June.)

The North Carolina Tar Heels had to get by Elon and UNC-Wilmington, both North Carolina teams, as well as Mount St. Mary's in the opening regional tournament and now host Southern neighbor Coastal Carolina (Conway, SC) in a best of three series starting Saturday in Cary. (6/3)

The Heels started their trek in the NCAA tournament with a convincing 16-8 victory over Mount St. Mary's in a game that set a school record for most runs in an NCAA tourney game. Tim Fedroff led the way with a career-high six RBI while Seth Williams homered and drove in three.

Next, the Tar Heels disposed of UNC-Wilmington 5-1 in a game dominated by Alex White's pitching. White struck out eight and only allowed three hits while offensively Carolina got homers from Tim Federowicz and Kyle Seager,

The nationally No. 2 ranked Carolina squad closed out the regional with a 7-3 win over UNC-Wilmington, which eliminated Elon earlier. The Heels did most of their damage in the fifth inning when they scored five times, including three on a home run by Mark Fleury.

The Heels (49-12) were awarded a Super Regional on Monday night and will face off in a best of three series against Coastal Carolina (50-12) at the USA Baseball Field in Cary.

Coastal Carolina defeated the Tar Heels 11-4 in March in Cary as the Chanticleers scored six in the first inning (four of the runs reached base on walks). The Heels defeated Coastal Carolina 6-5 in the teams only matchup in NCAA tournament play back in 2004.

Catcher Dock Doyle leads Coastal with 72 RBI on the season but there are six other starters batting over .340 on the season. Pitcher Nick McCully has a 10-2 record on the mound with a 3.09 ERA. The first game is at noon Saturday and can only be seen in person or on ESPNU, which is not available in most homes. Game 2 is at 1 p.m. Sunday and is being televised by ESPN.
