Off the cuff: The Carolina bench situation has quickly become a problem. Almost every game the opponent's bench outscores the UNC bench and it was no different against Miami.

In fact, the Tar Heels got a grand total of two points contributed from reserves. Those two points came from Puff Johnson, who many of us had been clamoring to become a starter in place of Pete Nance. (Miami got nine points from its bench.)

Johnson missed five of six shots in 14 minutes while Nance missed four of five shots in 30 minutes of play.

Four other reserves combined for just 12 minutes of playing time. Much of that came in the last few minutes when Coach Davis was substituing offense (Tyler Nickel) for defense (Seth Trimble).

Nickel, Trimble, D'Marco Dunn and Jalen Washington combined for three shots.

While Coach Davis has done a great job recruiting, with the way guys are moving around these days, you have to think some of the subs are getting disgruntled with their playing time and may look to transfer.

When you're winning and contributing a little bit, those aren't big problems. But losing and hardly playing has to wear on guys.

Coach Davis' job is to put the best players out there for as long as possible to get wins. But when there is foul trouble or cold shooting or uninspired play, you need a strong bench. And he hasn't developed one.

The talent is there but the experience is not.

The big story of the game was the cold shooting by Carolina, especially from the three-point line. But the Heels were also outrebounded 40-32 by Miami, which is just a superior team at this juncture.

The N.C. State game Sunday should tell us all we need to know about the Tar Heels chances in the ACC and NCAA (or NIT) tournaments.

Miami 80, Carolina 72
Tar Heels go cold again, lose at home

Coming off an impressive three-point shooting night two nights early, North Carolina could not keep the hot shooting going, missing a UNC record 26 three pointers en route to an 80-72 loss at home to Miami. (2/13)

Miami, playing as well as any team in the league, got big games from Jordan Miller and Nijel Pack, who scored 24 and 23 points respectively.

"We just didn't play well enough to win but you have to give credit to Miami," UNC coach Hubert Davis said. "We didn't have an answer for Miller and Pack."

On the other end of the court, Carolina had trouble getting the ball inside to big man Armando Bacot and couldn't hit from outside.

"There wasn't much room to get the ball to him," Coach Davis said. "To loosen it up, you have to make some perimeter jump shots. We had some wide-open looks - we just didn't make them."

In a back-and-forth first half, Carolina made just one of 11 three pointers yet only trailed 35-34 going into the break.

A 15-2 Miami run to start the second half changed the complexion of the game as the Hurricanes went up 54-40 with 11:30 left.

A Leaky Black three and a Black steal and layin under the basket cut the lead by to single digits. The Miami lead hovered around eight to 12 points until the last couple of minutes when the Tar Heels made a run.

Black scored inside and R.J. Davis came up with a steal, was fouled and hit a pair of free throws to put the Heels to within five at 69-64 with 1:10 to go.

A long three by Caleb Love cut the margin to just four with 35 seconds left at 73-69. With Carolina having to foul, the Hurricanes hit seven of eight free throws down the stretch to keep the Heels at arm's length.

The free throw disparity was a big part of the game as Miami was 22 of 26 for the game while Carolina was just nine of 15. In addition, the Heels ended the game hitting just five of 31 threes compared to Miami's six of 13 from beyond the arc.

"Hitting threes opened things up Saturday (against Clemson). We don't have to make 15 threes," Coach Davis said referring to the Carolina total two days earlier. "But we've got to make some. When we struggle to make shots from the outside it makes it difficult for us."

Love led Carolina with 23 points while Davis scored 20. Black had 13 points and nine rebounds while Bacot added 12 points but only four rebounds.

Miami, winners of five in a row against the likes of Clemson and Duke, improves to 21-5 overall and 12-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Tar Heels, now on the NCAA bubble with a 16-10 overall record and 8-7 conference, gets several days to prepare to play N.C. State in Raleigh on Sunday.
