Off the cuff: Carolina fans have all kinds of superstitions to talk about after losing in basketball and football at the same time.

For instance, they shouldn't play football on Fridays. They shouldn't wear a one-off uniform and metallic helmets against a rival.

The good vibes are split when the teams play at the same time.

All those things may be true but Carolina's offensive play calling was horrendous on the football field and Carolina's late turnovers opened the door for Iowa State on the basketball court.

With Carolina basketball still up 61-58 with just over three minutes to play, the team's All-America candidate Armando Bacot committed three straight turnovers - all on bad passes.

When the Heels got behind, they needed their other offensive hotshot but Caleb Love missed badlly on two straight shots and Iowa State came up with the rebounds.

Bacot had five turnovers on the day while Love had three. Carolina's best players need to take control.

The Tar Heels hit only three of 18 three-point shots compared to nine of 20 for Iowa State. That's 18 points Carolina needed to make up. The Heels couldn't do it.

Cyclones' Grill Tar Heels with late run

The North Carolina basketball team, up by seven with less than four minutes to go, seemed to be on its way to salvaging a Black Friday that saw its football team lose in overtime to rival N.C. State. But Iowa State's Caleb Grill scored 10 points down the stretch, including two of his seven three-pointers on the day, to lead the Cyclones to a 70-65 victory over the No. Tar Heels. (11/25)

Grill, who had been averaging just over seven points a game and was a mere four of 24 from beyond the three-point line, scored a career-high 31 points on a seven of 11 three-point shooting night.

"(Grill) played out of his mind. Credit to him," UNC's Caleb Love said. "He hit a lot of crazy shots - a lot of shots that were over our hands and a lot of deep ones. It was tough (to defend) obviously because he was hitting a lot of tough shots."

UNC coach Hubert Davis said Grill was hot the whole game so it came down to Carolina errors at the end. "We turned the ball over a couple of times, and you just can't do it in late game situations," he said. "You have to be sound and disciplined and you have to do that on both ends of the floor. And we just didn't do it against them tonight."

With Carolina up 60-53, Grill tossed in a three with 3:28 to go and then hit another with 2:25 left to go to tie it at 61-all. After a pass from UNC's Armando Bacot was stolen, Grill scored to put the Cyclones up for good at 63-61. Iowa State hit seven free throws to wrap it up.

Carolina led by as many as nine points in the first half. But threes by Grill and Jaren Holmes got Iowa State back in it as the Tar Heels led just 34-32 at the half.

The Tar Heels went on a 10-0 run midway through the second half to seemingly get control of the game at 55-47 with less than seven minutes to play. A Pete Nance three following a missed free throw made for a four-point possession for the Heels during the stretch.

But a 17-5 run by Iowa State over the last four minutes did in the Tar Heels just as the football team was failing to keep pace with N.C. State in overtime.

R.J. Davis led the Tar Heels with 15 points while Bacot had 13 and Love finished with 12.

Carolina, 5-1, plays Alabama at 3:30 p.m. Sunday for third place in the Phil Knight Invitational tournament.

Iowa State (5-0) now plays No. 20 UConn for the tournament title.
